Saw a truck like this today. It was a super clean 88-91 F150 XLT Lariat in black with red interior. My loins ached for a moment. I'm craigslisting right now...

Toyota Tundra - your wallet will thank you.

My parents have one of these, a red regular cab 4x4 with a 5-speed and a 302 V8. I covet it. It’s a blast to drive. I’ve told them they need to sell it to me if they ever get rid of it.

I also occasionally long for a first generation Tundra Limited Access cab. A friend has had one since 2007 or so and it has close to 400k on it now.

He said every 200k he gets the starter and intake manifold gaskets replaced as preventive maintenance.

No car now given where I live, but when I had them I’d do preventive maintenance when it got to the point where I could afford it (the late 80s). My last car, the ‘97 SHO, had a new serpentine belt just in case, and about 65K I just went ahead and replaced it. Out of a CRX Si, a couple Toyotas, and a 300D, the SHO was the most reliable car I’ve ever owned.

And they made bucket loads of those before the switch to the new body style so used parts are available. They were giving those away with that ancient 300CID inline 6. It’s like the definition of a functional truck.

That's amazing. I had an 89 SHO for a day before it managed to chew its gearbox into tiny chunks of twisted metal. I was on SHOForum a lot in like 2002-03 looking for parts. I eventually gave the car to a forum member who used the engine for parts.

That engine was a V8 with Yamaha heads, 3.4 liters. I ran Mobil 1 from Day 1, and I had no problems. Maybe that was why, maybe not, but I heard a few tales of woe about that motor. The only thing that went wrong on that car was the 6 CD changer in the trunk (replaced 4 times) but that was JBL’s fault, not Ford’s.

The cam sprockets would shear off on those engines. It was a common enough issue that most of the V8s on SHOForum had their cams welded. Also, they tended to have transmission issues, but that’s a Taurus thing. I remember seeing at least one with the 5-speed from a Contour SVT swapped in. I don’t know if he ever got it running right, though.
Uncorked, those engines sounded glorious.
And here are a couple of V8 Manual SHOs from an old, old video:

That car did sound good. And, as near as makes no difference, I put 100M miles on it without incident.
